Shur-Way Offers local and long distance moving. Both Residential and Commercial. We can accommodate any size move. Also, short and long term storage options, full packing and unpacking, custom crating for all your antiques and artwork, piano moving and antique moving.
What credentials should I look for in a moving company?
There are several ways to check on your movers, and it is extremely easy to look for their credentials in Illinois and other states where there is State regulation. The I.C.C. (Ilinois Commerce Commission) is the group in Springfield who governs Moving Companies in Illinois. Our ICC # is 18024 The U.S. Department of Transportation governs all movers coast to coast. US DOT # 0172887 (PLEASE SEE LINKS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE) This industry is governed to protect you, the consumer. Without these governing factors, there would be thousands of rogue movers attempting to move your home, creating a possibly harmful situation where your personal and professional goods are lost or damaged with little recourse for compensation and a solution.
When should I call a moving company?
Shur-Way can accommodate any move at any time, however if you are planning your move May through September it is ideal to contact your movers at least 2 to 3 weeks before your planned move. If you are moving October through April, then please allow 1 to 2 weeks lead-time. The earlier you contact your mover the better prepared you will be.
Do I need an estimate?
An estimate is essential in the moving industry. If you are moving a very small amount of goods we can perform an over the phone estimate. We feel that 99% of all moves should require an in-home estimate which is the most accurate.
What exactly is ‘travel time’?
Travel time is the time it takes us to get to and from your old and new home. We have fixed travel times depending on where you live. This applies only to local moves done within: Lake, Cook, McHenry, DuPage, Kane and Will Counties.
Getting Ready For The Move
When is the best time to move?
There really isn’t a best time to move. However, our busy season is normally April through October. Moving through these months we have more daylight to work with. During the months of November-March it is normally slower and our staff is more limited.
How long does it take to move?
Each move will be different. Depending on the size of your home or business will typically determine how long your move will take. There are many variables in this industry; long walks, elevators, packing, closings on your homes. Please schedule an in-home estimate so that we may look at all these variables and give you an accurate estimate.
How big are your trucks?
Shur-Way has six different size trucks to make any move easy and efficient. From smaller 26’ box trucks all the way to Semi-Trucks with 53’ trailers.
How and when will I pay?
On local moves we normally ask for payment upon completion of the work by personal check. On long distance moves we would ask for a cashier’s check upon delivery before the driver starts to unload. On any long distance move you would know your final price before you leave your place of origin.
Can I pack clothes in my dresser drawers?
Again all moves are a little different. Some dressers you can leave only soft goods inside, however most large dressers should be empty. You can use luggage and or duffel bags to pack up your clothes as well.
Am I protected against loss or damage?

How should I pack my belongings, if I am doing it myself?
If you choose to do some or all of your own packing in preparation for your move then ensure that boxes are packed tightly with padding after items are inside to prevent shifting during transportation. You can use anything like packing paper, blankets or linens to pack these boxes tight. Be sure that the top of the box is firm and that you do not leave any empty space inside which would cause a box to crush.
What happens when there is no loading area for trucks?
We will use whatever space is necessary for loading and unloading. If a parking permit is needed we can help to arrange that.
Is my building going to want to know anything about my move?
Some buildings will need a Certificate of Insurance (COI) so they know we will cover any damage to the property you are moving out of or into. Please speak to your property manager about this and determine what your building requirements are.
Is there an additional charge for elevators or long hallways?
No, Shur-Way does not charge anything additional for long walks or elevators.
Can my possessions be stored temporarily?
We can store your items either short or long term.
Should I move jewelry and other valuables myself?
Any possession you can handle yourself and are considering irreplaceable we recommend you transport yourself.
What happens when it is raining or snowing the day of my move?
Your belongings will be protected before they leave the front door on days when the weather is not cooperating with us. If they are forecasting for severe weather conditions and our schedule allows it, we may be able to re-schedule your move if needed (ONLY IF OUR SCHEDULE ALLOWS IT). There are circumstances which we would not be able to re-schedule because of the time of year and how busy we are.
Will you unpack my belongings and clean up after?
Shur-Way can perform a full unpack and debris removal if needed.
Am I supposed to tip the movers?
Gratuity is NOT required or expected, but it is not uncommon for our customers to tip their movers. If you choose to tip your mover the amount is entirely up to you. Similar to if you were to tip any other profession; the tip should be based upon the service you feel you received. Please understand that some customers will base their tip off of how much work the packers and or movers have done for the day or multiple days.
After Your Move
Unfortunately one of my items was damaged or lost, what should I do?
Please contact our office, and ask for our claims department. You will be sent a claim form to fill out and return to our office. Please note that your claim will be processed based solely upon the valuation selection that you declared and signed for on your bill of lading.
